Pear-haps
Pear-haps I could paint a pear, I thought,
In the style of the old masters
Would it be a single pear, or a pair of pears?
Single is simpler
The outline is fluid, pear shaped in fact
And add the stem
Composition is paramount so,
Make sure it positioned on a golden third
The light is coming from the right, right?
So the shadow goes on the left
Oil painting rule number one
Start with the darkest color
I’ll fill in the background
Allow for the shadow and reflection
Blue and yellow, limited pallet, makes a green
That should do it for the pear
Choose a brush size to execute
Then take the next size up
Then mix all the colors and the values
And pre-pear to paint
Pear-haps I will paint a pear
Waiting to Fly
Tired, now, of scrambled egg dinners
And canned yellow cling peaches
Smothered in mustard colored custard
It’s been a stressful trip to the airport
Seems like more than ninety years getting there
But enjoyable, all the same
Exhausting passage through baggage check in
Lost a friend or two in passport control
And then the boarding call heralded a sense of finality
Finally settled into my window seat
Safety belt click, confirms the cocoon of my comfort
Knowing that the I am free from outside contact
Ready for take off into the blue yonder
A first class grin in anticipation of my trip
Into peace and tranquility at my new destination

Can’t wait to drive UP Gibraltar again
I’m going mad, and I’ve got to get sane
Traverse the sky road saddleback
See that view of Santa Barbara
and the harbor
Then down to Eden on the switchback
Getting out of the city
Going to where it’s so pretty
Shady oaks and the grassy plain
Can’t wait to drive UP Gibraltar again.
Can’t wait to soak in the natural spring
and clear my mind of that city thing.
Wallow in peace and tranquility
Watch the Jay’s, the dragonflies
and the moon rises
Exposed to nature and humility.
Getting out of the city
Going to where it’s so pretty
Warm water, cool breezes, free rein
Can’t wait to drive UP Gibraltar again.
Can’t wait to move on and ride the Sky Road
to Zaca Lake, relaxation mode.
Dive from the raft where the green waters gleam,
To warm, quiet depths in an emerald dream;
And watch the still heron keep guard by the shore,
Its presence as steady and sure as before.
Getting out of the city
Going to where it’s so pretty
Bacon smells and ashes remain
Can’t wait to drive UP Gibraltar again.
Can’t wait to drive DOWN Gibraltar again
My mind’s refreshed and I have no pain.
Travel the coast along the bay
passed Tar Pit’s, Rincon
on the way
back again, to the metropolis of LA.
Going back to the city
where it’s not as pretty
But need to reside for capital gain.
Can’t wait to drive UP Gibraltar again.
